The day I realized my passion wouldn't become my full-time job.
Biggest mistake in my career
Bonjour everyone!
And a warm welcome to the 22 new readers who joined this week! 😊
You may not know this, but I spent 15 years in retail. I was one of those people who was genuinely passionate about their job.
I loved everything: my company, my team, my role.
and big bonus, I was surrounded by smart & inspiring people.
But after a few years (and especially after Covid) something started to change
I started feeling off.
Going to work became harder.
For months I knew something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t explain what.
I felt lost.
So I stepped back, and I started using some coaching tools. That’s when I realized something important: my values had shifted, and my job wasn’t aligned with them anymore.
I felt like I was living a life that wasn’t really mine anymore.
One day my coach gave me one exercise that helped me point out something I hadn’t realize: I wanted to make an impact.
Not just sell things people didn’t really need :(
Meanwhile the world of sustainability became a real passion. It was everywhere in my personal life. Our family habits were all around it.
So I thought: This is it. I have found my dream job! and on top of that, I’m making a difference in people’s lives!
How amazing would it be to work on something I care about and get paid for it?
So I went all in.
I contacted CSR experts to understand their work.
I partnered with the Head of sustainability at my company.
I launched eco-friendly initiatives internally.
I even completed a Cambridge course on Sustainability in Business.
And another program with the Australian University of Business Intelligence.
All of that took months, on top of my full-time job.
And in the end, I discovered something important
I still love sustainability. But I wasn’t interested enough to do it every single day.
And you know what? I don’t regret a single minute of it.
Because going through the process was the only way for me to truly find out
Don’t keep your fantasy in the back of your mind, you might be picturing a version of reality that isn’t quite true.
The fastest way to know is to quickly move into practice.
Start a side project.
Talk to people in the field.
practice with someone who’s already there
Take a short course and test it in real life.
Passion sounds great in theory.
Practice tells you whether you can actually build a career around it.
Today, this is exactly the kind of situation I help clients navigate in career coaching:
turning confusion & lots of questioning, into a clear direction.. before investing years in the wrong direction. From theory to practice.
If that sounds like you, DM now and let’s have a chat. Here, I sincerely would love to hear your story.
if you’re interested, I’ll share how I went from the corporate world to building my own coaching business, which tools I have used, and why today I’m 100% sure I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
Have a great week!
Stephanie.
