It’s too late to change careers after 40: Myth or reality?

Have you noticed how more and more people around us talk about changing careers—yet very few actually do it?

You know that moment at a family dinner when someone in Finance says:
“Yes, I would have loved to own a restaurant… but now, you know, at my age…”

Or when someone in Marketing says:
“I’m not growing that much in my role. I think I would have loved to open my own company… but you know, at my age…”

These 3 words “at my age” are one of the reasons that pushed me to become a career coach.
It reflects the limiting beliefs that hold us back from doing the things we love.

But as I always say: it’s not about following your passion blindly and hoping the universe will somehow reward you with a miracle. It’s about doing it with a plan. A career change can be done strategically and in a financially safe way.

Mid-career is a Turning Point

We start to reassess what truly matters: our values, our legacy, our impact.
Suddenly, climbing the corporate ladder doesn’t feel as meaningful as it once did.

We see a huge mountain in front of us:

  • We now got years of experience in one single field

  • A stable salary we’re afraid to lose (What happens if I don’t earn the same?)

  • Responsibilities: kids, mortgage, lifestyle…

In fact: we are scared of the unknown.

The real obstacle isn’t age: it’s your perspective

Looking at the whole mountain at once is the biggest mistake.
It freezes you.

But what if you focused on the next small step instead of the entire peak?

She’s taken the leap: that’s her story

She was a doctor. An expat. 18 years abroad.
She followed her partner to Asia, but visa restrictions limited her options.

She had 2 options:

  1. Complain about the system and try to stay in the medical field, compromising on salary and purpose.

  2. See this as an opportunity to reinvent herself and explore a passion she had buried for years: becoming an entrepreneur.

Now she’s built a career she can carry anywhere: a portable career.
She is happy. And very fulfilled.

Want to do the same? start with this simple step

Write down:

  • What no longer serves you in your current job

  • What energizes you when you think about the future

  • One small action you can take in the next 7 days (a call, a course, a conversation with someone in your ideal field)

  • And most importantly, review or reassess this list every. single. week. because it’s not a one-off that will shift the dial, right?

Don’t wait for the perfect plan.
The first step is ALWAYS the hardest. After that, the mountain starts to look smaller.
